"People who go to a performance want to understand it immediately. Nobody goes to the theater or to a film 10 times to find out what something really means. So you have to be as clear as possible to the audience. That doesn't mean the music has to be easy or stupid. People like to listen to all kinds of strange music, if they can hear an intensity or a heart behind it." Saxofonist/klarinettist Willem Breuker over wat hem zo trekt aan het schrijven van muziek voor het theater, in een interview dat David Cronin met hem had voor de Europese editie van The Wall Street Journal.
